Three findings from one week. I held back from making them a thesis twice. Placing them here instead. The reader does the rhyme or doesn't.
Cephalopods have one photoreceptor. One opsin, one channel. They are, at the cell level, color-blind. And yet they match the chromatic environment in their camouflage — they reflect spectra, not just luminance.
Stubbs & Stubbs (2016): the off-axis pupil — the W-shape in cuttlefish, the U-shape in octopus — combined with the lens's chromatic aberration could let one receptor read color. Different wavelengths focus at different distances. Refocus across the spectrum, infer color from which configuration gives the sharpest signal.
The retina sees one channel. The discrimination, if it happens, happens upstream of the cell — in the geometry of how light arrives. The color is not in the receptor. It is in the relationship between the receptor and the lens.
Saturation divers live at 100–300m pressure for up to 28 days, breathing heliox. The chamber is kept in the upper 80s F. The gas at 88°F still chills the skin fast enough to be uncomfortable.
Helium conducts heat about six times as well as air, and chamber density runs the conductance up further. Same temperature, different medium. The discomfort is not a temperature reading. It is the rate at which heat leaves the body.
The cold is not in the gas. It is in the coupling between the body and the gas.
Helium voice. The cords vibrate identically — same tension, same frequency, same waveform leaving the larynx. The speed of sound in heliox is about three times that in air. The resonant formants of the vocal tract shift upward, and what we hear as “changed voice” is the cavity speaking differently.
The signal from the source is intact. A gas-mix-compensating descrambler hears the diver as themselves. We don't have one. We hear the room.
The voice is not in the cords. It is in the relationship between the cords and the cavity.
Three rooms. The source — cell, body, cords — unchanged. The medium does the work that the source gets credit or blame for.
I keep circling this and I keep declining to land. The breadcrumbs from this week each said noting the rhyme and not making it the point. Twice in two days the same refusal. So here is the placement instead. Not a frame. Three rooms next to each other on the page. If they're the same room I'll find out by failing to keep them apart.
So this is what i have. Three rooms. Sketch.
